動物科學(xué)技術(shù)學(xué)院前身為畜牧系，1950年4月，由國立西北農(nóng)業(yè)專科學(xué)校畜牧科和草原科并入國立獸醫(yī)學(xué)院創(chuàng)建畜牧專業(yè)，隨后成立畜牧系。經(jīng)學(xué)校批準(zhǔn)，先后更名為動物生產(chǎn)工程系（1993年9月）、動物科學(xué)技術(shù)系 (1999年7月 )，2001年3月學(xué)校院系調(diào)整時(shí)成立動物科學(xué)技術(shù)學(xué)院。

動物科學(xué)技術(shù)學(xué)院是我國高等農(nóng)業(yè)院校中辦學(xué)歷史較長，并在國內(nèi)外畜牧學(xué)界有著廣泛影響的學(xué)院。學(xué)院秉承老一輩“勤奮嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)、求實(shí)創(chuàng)新”的優(yōu)良傳統(tǒng)，經(jīng)過60多年的建設(shè)與發(fā)展，已成為我國畜牧高級專業(yè)人才培養(yǎng)和科學(xué)研究的重要基地。學(xué)院設(shè)有動物營養(yǎng)與飼料系、動物遺傳育種與繁殖系、動物生產(chǎn)與管理系、水產(chǎn)養(yǎng)殖系和動物科學(xué)技術(shù)實(shí)驗(yàn)教學(xué)中心等教學(xué)機(jī)構(gòu)，設(shè)甘肅省現(xiàn)代養(yǎng)豬工程技術(shù)研究中心、甘肅省草食動物生物技術(shù)重點(diǎn)實(shí)驗(yàn)室、甘肅省牛羊基因改良工程實(shí)驗(yàn)室、西北地區(qū)肉羊肉牛遺傳改良國際科技合作基地和畜牧系統(tǒng)工程研究所等研究平臺。

2001年經(jīng)國家人事部批準(zhǔn)設(shè)立畜牧學(xué)博士后科研流動站。2003 年經(jīng)國務(wù)院學(xué)位委員會批準(zhǔn)獲畜牧學(xué)一級學(xué)科博士學(xué)位授予權(quán)，下設(shè)二級學(xué)科（博士點(diǎn)）有：動物遺傳育種與繁殖、動物營養(yǎng)與飼料科學(xué)、特種經(jīng)濟(jì)動物飼養(yǎng)和動物生產(chǎn)學(xué)。學(xué)院具有農(nóng)業(yè)推廣（養(yǎng)殖領(lǐng)域）碩士專業(yè)學(xué)位授予權(quán)。動物遺傳育種與繁殖為農(nóng)業(yè)部重點(diǎn)學(xué)科，畜牧學(xué)一級學(xué)科為甘肅省重點(diǎn)學(xué)科，動物科學(xué)專業(yè)為甘肅省特色專業(yè)。現(xiàn)開設(shè)動物科學(xué)、動物科學(xué)（畜牧獸醫(yī)方向）、水產(chǎn)養(yǎng)殖學(xué)3個本科專業(yè)和自學(xué)考試應(yīng)用型獨(dú)立本科段（專升本）動物科學(xué)專業(yè)；學(xué)院為甘肅省飼料工業(yè)職業(yè)技能鑒定培訓(xùn)考評基地。

學(xué)院積極開展國內(nèi)外學(xué)術(shù)交流，不斷提高辦學(xué)水平和人才培養(yǎng)質(zhì)量。學(xué)院與美國、法國、德國、羅馬尼亞、澳大利亞、意大利、匈牙利、加拿大、新西蘭、土耳其、泰國、南非、肯尼亞、烏克蘭等10余個國家的大學(xué)和科研機(jī)構(gòu)等開展學(xué)術(shù)交流與合作活動，與國內(nèi)相關(guān)知名大學(xué)、研究單位及企業(yè)建有廣泛的聯(lián)系。學(xué)院現(xiàn)有10余家校外教學(xué)科研基地和大學(xué)生就業(yè)實(shí)踐基地。

學(xué)院圍繞國家和地方經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展中的重大科技問題開展了廣泛的科學(xué)研究。60多年來，學(xué)院廣大教師以嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)?shù)闹螌W(xué)態(tài)度和勤奮求實(shí)的精神，取得了顯著的教學(xué)、科研成果，學(xué)院教師先后主持完成或正在完成的國家、省（部）級科研成果或項(xiàng)目200余項(xiàng)，發(fā)表學(xué)術(shù)論文1000余篇，主編、參編出版教材、著作80余部。

學(xué)院具有一支梯隊(duì)結(jié)構(gòu)合理、學(xué)術(shù)水平優(yōu)良、研究方向穩(wěn)定且特色鮮明的師資隊(duì)伍。現(xiàn)有教職工49人，其中教授13人，副教授15人，講師12人，助教4人。博士生導(dǎo)師15人，碩士生導(dǎo)師38人，中青年教師已獲博士學(xué)位20人，在讀博士7人。先后有10多位教師榮獲國家級、省級榮譽(yù)稱號，享受政府特殊津貼6人，甘肅省優(yōu)秀專家2人，甘肅省科技功臣1人。現(xiàn)有第六屆國務(wù)院學(xué)科評議組成員1人，教育部高等學(xué)校教學(xué)指導(dǎo)委員會委員2人，入選甘肅省“333”、“555”人才工程6人，甘肅省特聘科技專家2人，甘肅省領(lǐng)軍人才3人，國家現(xiàn)代農(nóng)業(yè)產(chǎn)業(yè)技術(shù)體系崗位科學(xué)家2人。在全國學(xué)術(shù)團(tuán)體任理事以上職務(wù)10多人。

學(xué)院具有本科教育和研究生教育多層次、多學(xué)科的培養(yǎng)體系。60多年來，學(xué)院已為社會培養(yǎng)各類專業(yè)人才8058人，其中博士研究生82人，碩士研究生632人，本科生3239人，專科生1203人，成人及自考本科生2902人，畢業(yè)生遍及海內(nèi)外，涌現(xiàn)出如英國皇家科學(xué)院院士等大批專家、官員和企業(yè)家。目前學(xué)院有各類在讀學(xué)生2804人，其中，博士研究生33人，碩士研究生137人，本科生753人，自考本科生1881人。（2014年3月20日）

Brief Introduction to College of Animal Science and Technology

College of Animal Science and Technology (CAST) developed from Department of Animal Husbandry. In April 1950，Animal husbandry and grassland subjects of National Northwest Agricultural Academy School were merged with National Veterinary College and adopted the name of Department of Animal Husbandry. Upon the approval by Gansu Agricultural University, Department of Animal Husbandry was renamed to Department of Animal Production Engineering (September 1993), and Department of Animal Science and Technology (July 1999). In March 2001, when the university adjusted its faculties, College of Animal Science and Technology was founded.

CAST is longer in history of the higher agricultural universities in China, and also enjoys good reputation and well influenced in international and domestic animal husbandry fields with inheriting the older generation’s excellent tradition of DILIGENCE, PRECISENESS, HONESTY and INNOVATION. After 60 years of construction and development, CAST has become an important base for a senior professional personnel training and scientific research in animal husbandry in China.

There are five teaching departments in the College, namely Department of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, Department of Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction, Department of Animal Production and Management, Department of Aquaculture, and Experiment and Teaching Center of Animal Science Technology, and four teaching and researching institutes including Gansu Research Center for Swine Production Engineering Technology, Gansu Key Laboratory of Herbivorous Animal Biotechnology, Gansu Engineering Lab of Genetic Improvement in Ruminants, International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Genetic Improvement of Mutton Sheep Beef Cattle in Northwest China  and Animal Husbandry Systematic Engineering Research Institute of Gansu Agricultural University. By authorization of State Ministry of Personnel, Animal Husbandry Post-doctoral station was founded in 2001. There was the 1st level discipline of PhD program in Animal Husbandry, upon the approval by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, PRC in 2003. CAST offers four the 2nd level doctor’s programs in agronomy disciplines, namely, Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction Science, Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, Rearing of Special-type Economic Animals, and Animal Production. CAST has the right to grant master's degree of Agricultural Extension (breeding areas). Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction Science is the key subject of Ministry of Agricultural. In addition, Animal Husbandry (1st level) is the key subject of Gansu Province and Animal Science is the specialties subject of Gansu Province. CAST offers three undergraduate specialties including Animal Science, Animal Science (animal husbandry and veterinary direction) and Aquiculture, and also offers undergraduate specialties of Animal Science for self-taught students. In addition, CAST is the training and evaluating base for Gansu Feed Industry Professional Skills.

CAST actively carries out academic exchanges at home and abroad, improves the educational level and quality of personnel training continuously. It also has established long-standing academic exchanges and cooperation activities with many foreign universities and institutes of many countries such as United States, France, Germany, Rumania, Australia, Italy, Hungary, Canada, New Zealand, Turkey, Thailand, South Africa, Kenya, Ukraine and so on. It has also tied extensive relationship with many well-known domestic universities, research institutions and enterprises. At present, CAST has established more than ten teaching and research bases and practical bases for students of employment outside the compus.

In order to adapt itself to the need of some key technological research projects of social and economic development including national and provincial level, CAST has carried out extensive science research programs in the past 60 years. Based on rigorous scholarship and realistic attitude and hard-working spirit, the majority of teachers have obtained remarkable achievements in teaching and researching. College staffs have completed or are completing more than 200 national, provincial (ministry) level scientific research projects and programs, have published more than 1000 academic research papers, and more than 80 professional books and teaching materials.

Faculty of the college shows reasonable structure, excellent academic and research capabilities, stationary research orientation and remarkable character. The number of its faculty and staff amounts to 49, including 13 professors, 15 associate professors, 12 lecturers and 4 assistants. Among them, 15 are supervisors for Ph.D. students and 38 supervisors for M.S. students, 20 middle-aged and young teachers with doctor’s degree, and 7 are applying for doctor’s degree. More than 10 teachers have been awarded honorary title of the national level or ministerial/provincial level, 6 professors enjoy special government allowances, 2 professors are named as the outstanding experts in Gansu Province, 1 teacher enjoys "Gansu Provincial Science and Technology Hero".1 professor is the member of Discipline Review Group of the State Council, 2 professors are the member of Higher Education Teaching Guidance

Committee of the Ministry of Education, 6 professors were selected in Gansu province "333", "555" Talent Project. In addition, 2 professors are Distinguished Technology Expert of Gansu Province ,3 professors are Leading Talent of Gansu Province ,2 professors are Scientist of National Modern Agricultural Technology System, more than 10 teachers have taken part in many national academic institutes.

CAST has formed a diversified and multi-disciplinary teaching and research system based on graduate and undergraduate programs. During past 60 years, the college has cultivated more than 8058 graduates in animal husbandry fields, among them 82 were doctoral students, 632 postgraduates and 3239 undergraduates, 1203 junior college students, and 2902 self-taught undergraduates. Graduates of CAST from home and abroad have emerged a large number of prestigious experts, scholars, officials and entrepreneurs such as Prof. Yang Zi-heng who has become an academician of Britain Royal Academy of Sciences. At present, there are 2804 students studying in the college, among them 33 students are applying for doctor’s degree, 137 students for master’s degree, 753 undergraduates, and 1881 self-taught undergraduates.
